What to Wear to Fashion Week II

Red, in case you haven't heard, is the new black. Unfortunately, it mirrors the current economy, but at least in fashion, red is a good thing. The color is so sumptuous it can't help but cheer you up. I just can't get enough of red - it's the color of passion, of roses, of romance and true love.

Nothing goes better with red than pearls. Yes, pearls. White, black, or grey, whether cultured perfection or the natural wonder of salt water pearls, you just can't go wrong wearing them against a field of deep red. Emperors and conquerors have always used the hypnotic luster of pearls as a symbol of wealth and wisdom. What would the crown jewels be without pearls? Diamonds just look lonely when they’re not accompanied by pearls and red velvet. When you have the weight of the world on your head, you've got to look good!

What to Wear at Fashion Week

With Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week just two weeks away, I know that fashionistas everywhere are beginning to plan our looks for under the tents.

For fall 2011, clothes are ladylike and lovely all over again. Elegant shift dresses in bold colors will fill the real life runways of Madison Avenue and Rodeo Drive with delighted buyers. Pencil skirts and wasp waist jackets cut from tweeds and hounds tooth have lonely lapels that cry out for a glittering burst of color.

Webb on the Fly: Deco Echo

This Fall, fashion takes a look back to one of the most influential periods in the history of design, the 1920’s. And with good reason, I think. In our age of ‘bring it on’ fast fashion coupled with ‘let it all hang out’ reality TV, the restraint and refinement of the Art Deco movement makes for a perfect counterpoint to our daily cultural diet.

The 1920’s were filled with innovation in both jewelry and fashion. Coco Chanel introduced the silhouette that became all the rage with flappers during the Jazz Age. Tunic dresses that exposed bare arms and had hemlines slashed at the knees were scandalous testaments to women's new found freedom. Couturier Madame Vine invented the bias cut, which produced clothes still unparalleled to this day in their construction, simplicity and sophistication.

Summer Chic the Responsible Way

When one thinks of summer jewelry, we immediately think of the beautiful pinks and reds of coral. Coral hit the peak of its popularity in the 1970’s, and with jewelry from that era back en vogue, it’s no surprise to see it adorning the stylish set this summer. These Van Cleef & Arpels coral and diamond earrings are the epitome of 1970’s jewelry – bold, with an abstract, geometric form, and set in 18kt yellow gold. Yellow gold was the favored metal setting in the 1960’s and 1970’s, creating a more casual, daytime look versus the evening glamour of platinum.

Hamptons Getaway

As I prepared for my weekend getaway to the Hamptons, I took inspiration from the whimsical 1960’s pins that we’ve seen at CIRCA lately, including this 18kt gold Van Cleef & Arpels sun bonnet brooch with diamond and ruby accents. So, along with the summer essentials - this season’s Eres bathing suit, sun block, summer frocks, and my collection of summer jewelry – I gave a nod to our Barcelona colleagues and packed the ultimate in whimsical, retro footwear – esperdenyas. Yes, espadrilles, the fashion statement of summer 2011 migrates all the way from Catalan, Spain.

CIRCA Polo Team Reaches Semi-final

Polo at the CIRCA Championship Field in Bridgehampton is in full swing, and the CIRCA polo team has picked up where it left off last year - advancing to the semi-finals after a 10-7 victory on Saturday against a previously undefeated Equuleus team. The game was close throughout, with the lead changing hands several times and tied 7-7 going into the final chukker. CIRCA’s Cristian ‘Magoo’ Laprida then converted 3 penalty shots in the final chukker to give CIRCA the win.

Guest Blogger: Gigi Stone

Love is in the air. When TV personality Gigi Stone wed Ian Woods this summer, we couldn't resist asking her about the jewels for their special day. .

Tell us about your engagement ring:
Gigi - My ring is very classic. It features a large emerald cut in the middle flanked by smaller emerald cut stones in a platinum setting. Ian proposed to me while we were on a rowboat in the middle of Lake John in the Catskills.

What jewelry did you choose to wear on your wedding day?
Gigi - At my wedding I wanted my "borrowed" and "old" jewelry to be antique diamond droplet earrings I borrowed from my mom. When I was a little girl I always dreamed of wearing them one day. They strike me as very 'duchess of Windsor' or the iconic earrings Marilyn Monroe wore in Some Like It Hot.

Mix and Match

Victorian jewelry is as unique in its symbolism, sentiment and design as the fashion of that era. This uniqueness spawns from a flourishing curiosity in the new and old, marked by the exploration of ancient tombs and travels to new lands. Here we see a wonderful expression of this curiosity – an exquisitely crafted brooch showcasing Etruscan inspired metal work and Scottish banded agate accented with a charming rose cut diamond.
