The Classic Clover

Nothing says classic like the Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra collection. This timeless collection launched in 1968, and over the years has been developed in multiple variations, each upholding the understated elegance.

Most recognizable, and their best seller, is the white mother of pearl - Tres chic! Mother of pearl comes from a shell of a mollusk which protects the body from parasites and other foreign objects – essentially it is a blend of materials secreted by oysters and other marine creatures. VCA uses Indonesian and Japanese mother of pearl for its color uniformity; most desirable is an even color with a little iridescence. Symbolically, mother of pearl represents maternal instincts, femininity and provides security and well-being to those who wear it.

Also pictured, is an onyx and yellow gold version. Onyx is a rare volcanic gem with a shiny black luster – the deeper the black color the more desirable the stone. Onyx has been used in jewelry throughout history, mainly cut as cabochon or beads. Whether stacked and mixed or simply a single strand, these Alhambra necklaces are feminine and elegant.
